Blackheads. They’re one of the most common forms of skin imperfections, and no matter our skin type, many of us encounter them on a regular basis. Usually found on the chin, nose, and forehead, they’re easy to identify – often very dark in colour and covering a small surface area.
What causes blackheads?
When oil glands in our skin produce excess sebum, this oil can mix with dead skin cells and debris (such as tiny hairs) in the pore lining. Once there, the oil is exposed to the air and oxidises, creating a small, black spot on your skin.
More sebum is produced and secreted through our T-Zone, along our forehead and down our nose and chin. So, we often find more blackheads in these areas.
Blackheads: Common Myths
Blackheads should be easily recognisable. But, many of us struggle to tell the difference between a blackhead and a clogged pore.
While clogged pores – known as sebaceous filaments – look like blackheads, they’re actually different and require an alternative treatment method. Caused when the oil around the follicle makes the pore appear larger, they’re not a form of acne and therefore do not need to be treated in the same way.
Blackheads, by contrast, are often slightly raised, deeper in colour, and form sporadically rather than in clusters like clogged pores.
How to treat blackheads
Although blackheads are the subject of many a spot-popping online video, you should avoid the temptation of squeezing blackheads. Instead, cleansing your skin morning and night, and incorporating deep cleansing products into your skincare routine, is important for keeping your skin clear. It can also be beneficial to use salicylic acid, a blackhead-fighting ingredient, in order to keep blackheads at bay.
