Dehydrated skin: The difference between hydration and moisturisation

Dehydrated skin: The difference between hydration and moisturisation

Many of us assume that the terms ‘dry’ and ‘dehydrated’ mean the same thing when describing our skin. However, when it comes to skincare, and the products we use, these are actually two very different concerns. The truth is that all skin can be dehydrated. It’s not just something those of us with dry skin experience. The difference between dry and dehydrated skin is that where dry skin is lacking oils and other natural substances, dehydrated skin lacks water. This means that even if you have an oily, blemish-prone complexion, your skin can still be dehydrated.

Dehydrated Skin Causes

External factors and aggressors are among the most common causes of skin dehydration. Things we face every day, like exposure to the sun, air conditioning, central heating, and extreme weather can all draw water from our skin and cause it to become dehydrated.

Dehydrated Skin Symptoms

Given the prevalence of dehydrated skin, you may have suffered from some dehydrated skin symptoms in the past, just without knowing the cause. Signs of dehydrated skin include dull, tight, sensitive, rough in texture skin, which can show signs of ageing more clearly, with fine lines and wrinkles appearing more prominent.

Although it can be tempting to use rich, thick moisturisers in an attempt to quench dehydrated skin, it’s important not to confuse moisturisation with hydration when dealing with skin that’s lacking in water.

Products which claim to moisturise the skin can help lock in moisture, whereas hydrating products often contain humectants. Humectants are ingredients which attract water from the air. They also draw it up from lower layers of skin, meaning they’re intensely moisturising and hydrating.

How to treat dehydrated skin

In addition to drinking plenty of water, the use of products developed specifically for dehydrated skin can be helpful when trying to revive a dull, lacklustre complexion. Did you know? Your skin is the last organ to receive nutrients you consume, meaning it’s the last to get water you sip. Therefore, drinking lots of water isn’t always helpful when treating dehydrated skin; making topical products a must for skin that feels comfortably hydrated.
